May 2015

Dear Friends & Supporters,

ArtRage thrives because of supporters like you! Our exhibit Selma to Montgomery at 50 brought in a record breaking 1,900-plus visitors. Viewing Matt Herron’s seminal photographs, we grieved for, celebrated, and honored those whose shoulders we stand on. As a supporter, you should take pride in this exhibit and the many events that took place during its run: films, panel discussions, 26 school field trips, and original plays and poetry readings where young people spoke of being inspired by the words of Maya Angelo, Sonia Sanchez, and Syracuse’s own Jackie Warren Moore and Micere Mugo.

Selma to Montgomery at 50 recalled one civil rights struggle, while the exhibit Trans*cending Gender made visible another. Gavin Laurence Rouille’s conceptual art revealed the challenges faced by transgender and gender-nonconforming people; Rhys Harper’s photographs portrayed the real everyday people who live beyond these challenges. Again, this exhibit spurred numerous events, including the observance of Transgender Day of Remembrance at ArtRage.

Our current exhibit, Capillary Reaction, the paintings of Ron Throop, critiques hydraulic fracturing, and our final exhibit, Impressions, photographs by Michelle Gabel and Bruce Strong, concerns the conditions and struggles of the South Sudanese.

This is the work of ArtRage––to recall, make visible, and stay vigilant. Through art, we mourn and celebrate, ponder and motivate. And next year’s season promises to be just as compelling, with art that concerns labor and class, human trafficking and other forms of violence, racist stereotyping, immigration, and manipulation of the food we eat. But without you none of it could happen.

Your support makes possible not only ArtRage’s remarkable and diverse exhibits and events but also ongoing broad collaborations. This season, ArtRage worked with Paul Robeson Performing Arts Company, Cold Case Justice Initiative at Syracuse University College of Law, Neighbors of the Onondaga Nation, Empire State Pride Agenda, LGBTQ Resource Center at Syracuse University, Alliance of Communities Transforming Syracuse (ACTS), Light Work, Sierra Club, and a dozen or more other organizations.

With your support, ArtRage tackles new challenges. We opened this season with our first-ever juried exhibit. Over 100 artists from across the United States and beyond submitted work. Twenty-six pieces were selected for the exhibit Globalissues.Climatematters.socialChange.

In September 2014, ArtRage had 8 season sponsors (contributors of $500 or more); by December we had twenty-two! But whether you become a season sponsor or pledge/donate a smaller amount, know that everything described above is due to your generous support.

We know you appreciate the work we do and we thank you in advance for your consideration and support. Please give as generously as you can.
