SaturdaySCREENINGS: Brother Outsider – The Life of Bayard Rustin (2003)

February 27, 20108:00 pmto10:00 pm

Directed by Nancy Kates and Bennett Singer

brother outsiderDraws on rare archival footage, interviews, and even FBI files, to offer a powerful portrait of this forgotten political activist and Civil Rights strategist. Rustin’s nonviolent philosophy influenced Martin Luther King, but he was also a labor organizer, conscientious objector, and religious intellectual – all troublesome tags in the 20th century – and his open gay life forced him to stay in the background.

Over 20 awards including: GLAAD Award: Outstanding Documentary, NY, Gay and Lesbian Film Fest: Best Feature

SF Gay & Lesbian Film Festival: Best Documentary, Sundance: Grand Jury Prize.

“…finely detailed picture of a man who, even after his death in 1987, inspired people simply by being himself.” – Baltimore City paper
